Our Autumn-Themed Movie Guide Proves Fall Has Major Main Character Energy

Alongside crunchy leaves and pumpkin-flavored everything, autumn brings endless activities, like apple picking, pumpkin carving, hiking, bonfires, hayrides, Halloween decorating—the list goes on. The introverts among us know that the dip in temperature also makes Fall the perfect season to stay in, curl up, and have a movie night (or several) as the nights get longer.

Because we love Fall and good old-fashioned sleepovers, The FMC took the liberty of compiling this quintessential guide to the ultimate cozy night in, complete with food and drink recommendations to really capture Autumn’s essence as you snuggle up with some of the most beloved characters to ever grace a screen.

So, light that oversized candle, grab the Trader Joe’s salted maple ice cream from the freezer, locate your fuzziest blanket, sprawl out on the couch, and settle in for an evening full of Fall magic.

When Harry Met Sally

Fall foliage is a scene stealer in this iconic Nora Ephron romcom that will have you rooting for the titular characters and craving a trip to the Big Apple. If you like enemies-to-lovers, will-they-won't-they, and friends-to-lovers tropes, or maybe just love 80s fashion, then this movie classic is a must-watch.

Hocus Pocus

This Halloween favorite is sure to put a spell on you. Spend the night in Salem, as a trio of devilish (and hilarious) 17th-century witches are accidentally awakened by unsuspecting kids on Halloween night. Tune in for the spooky vibes— talking black cats, cauldrons, and cemetery scenes—and stay for the nostalgia, musical numbers, and legendary performances by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as the Sanderson Sisters.

Practical Magic

Witches + Curses + Eccentric Family + Small New England Town = Perfect Fall Movie Recipe. Alice Hoffman’s novels were a favorite growing up and the movie adaptation of Practical Magic does not disappoint. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman star in this cult classic about two witch sisters dealing with life, loss, and a tricky family curse that dooms every man who falls in love with them to an untimely death.

Pride & Prejudice (2005)

While this film may not seem the most obvious contender for a seasonal pick, there’s something supremely cozy about a romantic period piece (and English accents). If you’re not in a spooky mood but still want an autumnal vibe for your movie night, let us introduce you to Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. There’s swooning, misunderstandings, and hand flexing. Need we say more?

The Harry Potter Series

“Yer a wizard, Harry,” said the half-giant gamekeeper. It doesn’t get much more magical than Hogwarts. Brew up some butterbeer and press ‘play’ on your favorite movie of the saga to get your fill of witches, wizards, potions, quidditch matches, and boarding school adventures.

The Addams Family (1991)

They're creepy and they're kooky, mysterious and spooky, they’re all together “ooky”... and they may be as close to America’s Strange Royal family as there is. Between Gomez and Morticia's passionate and expressive love, Wednesday’s deadpan wit, and the endearment of Thing, audiences haven’t been able to get enough of this offbeat and close-knit gothic family since the 1960s. In the 1991 box office smash, follow the family as they reconnect with a supposed long-lost relative who turns out to be a con artist.

Halloweentown

Speaking from experience, it’s hard enough to be a 13-year-old girl as is, let alone find out you’re descended from a line of witches, discover a secret portal to a magical world, and find the courage to fight a mayor like Marnie Piper does in Halloweentown. (Sorry, that’s a bit of a spoiler, but in all fairness, you’ve had 25 years to watch the movie). Debbie Reynolds is a delight playing Marnie’s grandmother in this Disney Channel classic and delivers the iconic line, “Being normal is vastly overrated.” We agree, Debbie.

Fun fact: Kimberly J. Brown, aka Marnie Piper, met her now-fiancée Daniel Kountz after starring in Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge.

Beetlejuice

Twilight

Moody Pacific Northwest scenery, a dark supernatural love triangle, an angsty soundtrack, and centuries-old rivalries. Whether you love the series or love to hate it, it’s undeniable that Twilight has all the makings of a cozy fall movie. Grab some popcorn and get swept away by the small town of Forks, Washington and its supernatural inhabitants.

Little Women (2019)

If you frequent this corner of the internet, you’re probably no stranger to the March sisters. Autumnal Massachusetts is a beautiful backdrop to this adored and timeless story exploring the complexities of sisterhood, family, and being a woman in the 19th century. If you need an excuse to indulge in this ultimate comfort watch, this is it.

Movie Night Essentials

Once you’ve decided just what to watch, it’s time to set the scene. Insanely creative options abound on TikTok and Instagram, but if you’re hoping for a more hands off, simple approach, here are some of our favorite things or easy ingredients you can pick up from your local supermarket.

When it comes to autumnal eats, think cozy and warm. Anything with a filling center or comforting spice should do the trick. You can still stick with the basics, such as popcorn or hummus, but tack on a seasonal twist, such as which veggies to pair with your dip or a sprinkle of cinnamon and sugar over the beloved movie snack.
