The FMC Spotlight: Katy Sullivan
Katy Sullivan is no stranger to opening doors such as being the first with a disability to portray Richard III in a major U.S. production. Last year, the actress who was born without the lower half of her legs became the first female amputee to ever perform on Broadway when she originated the role of Ani in the Pulitzer Prize Winning play Cost Of Living. Her portrayal earned her a Tony nomination, which subsequently made her the first amputee to be recognized by the voting committee. Prior to this, she took on numerous television roles, the most recent of which was Esther in Dexter: New Blood. She has also compiled an impressive resume of stage credits, such as Lady Windermere’s Fan and The Long Red Road, started her own production company and represented The United States in the 2012 Paralympic Games.
The FMC Spotlight: Megan Mannarelli-Martin
If you are on a particular side of TikTok–namely animal TikTok–you may recognize Megan Mannarelli-Martin as the face of the quickly growing MeganAndTheRescues. In 2020, the young philanthropist and animal lover co-founded Rafiki’s Rescue, an adoption center in Orange County, California, that works to rehabilitate, foster, and place special needs animals into loving forever homes. While the shelter is run in a similar fashion to countless others around the globe, Rafiki’s has a particular focus on offering education and assistance for the medical anomalies under their care. On her personal pages, Megan does just that, showcasing her adoptables with a particularly creative flare based around positivity, chaos and lots of serotonin.
The FMC Spotlight: Sabrina Grimaldi
Sabrina Grimaldi always knew she loved words. Since she was little, her free time has been spent reading and writing. At 24 years of age, not much has changed. She just gets paid for it now. With a journalism degree and a few years of freelance writing under her belt, Sabrina now proudly boasts the dual title of Creator and Editor-In-Chief of The Zillenial Zine, an online and print magazine that focuses on the online trends that appeal to Millenials, Gen-Z and those who identify as "cusps" on the generational divide. With the help of interns around The United States, The Zillenial posts daily articles about fitness, beauty, fashion, lifestyle, pop culture and anything else that the world at large has deemed in vogue.
The FMC Spotlight: Ryn Maiorana
There is a particular job in entertainment that is overlooked by many until Halloween. Often, when we sit down to watch our favorite films or television shows or lock our doors before heading to watch theatre, we aren't thinking about what the hair & makeup department will do. This is mainly because the artists aim to create work that can go unnoticed. Whether they are painting details for a contemporary scene or building prosthetics or other special effects needed in a more fantastic setting, their skill is judged by its ability to blend into the world around it. For Ryn Maiorana, however, it was something that always caught their eye. The FMC was lucky enough to carve out some time with Ryn during their busiest month to chat about post-grad life in the industry, their favorite kinds of looks, crafting Elvis' sideburns and more.
The FMC Spotlight: AshPoursDrinks
No party is complete without a cocktail (or mocktail–if liquor isn't your thing). Rum and Cokes or Jack and Gingers are nice if you are short on time, but if you really want to impress your guests, the perfect way to do that is with a themed cocktail. These days, inspiration isn't hard to find, with YouTube, TikTok, and Pinterest filled to the brim with easily accessible tutorials and recipes. Fun drinks fit for any occasion are just a click away. However, as the host or hostess, you must often decide just how the refreshment coincides with your celebration. Or, if you are lucky enough to stumble upon a creator, such as Ash, known as AshPoursDrinks on TikTok and Instagram, that work is done for you.
The FMC Spotlight: Rebel & Fleur
If you love something, make merchandise for it. At least, that’s Caity’s philosophy. In 2020, the future small business owner found herself with lots of extra time on her hands. Already equipt with a penchant for 'doodling' and an 'act now, ask questions later' mentality, Caity designed a Harry Potter-inspired graphic tee and listed it on Etsy. She didn't set out to make a name for herself within the realm of e-commerce, only to share her creation with others within the Wizarding World fandom, figuring people may want to wear her rendition of the Dark Mark on their post-pandemic Universal excursions or during at-home movie marathons. Her suspicion was correct. Almost overnight, her ever-growing audience was clamoring for more.
The FMC Spotlight: The Party
After over 15 years of combined experience in the entertainment industry and one pandemic, Margaret Borchert, Geneva Willis, & Tori Chancellordecided to self-produce ‘The Party,’ a scripted D&D-inspired comedy centering not on the game itself, but on the people sitting around the table. For The FMC’s inaugural spotlight series, the three female creatives spent some time talking, reminiscing and laughing about what they’ve learned from this years-long experience, their origins, and the stupidity required to find success.
